Win Pot 5 Cent 1940's Punchboard
Why order this 1940's Win Pot 5 Cent Punchboard?
Gamblers and those who are enamored with gambling will love this punchboard that dates back to the 1940's, one of the most important decades in American history. Punchboards were popular in the 19th century in bars and saloons, but operators began cheating by drilling their own holes in the board. With the cheating, their popularity declined. Late in the century, though, they regained their popularity with the invention of a new type of board in which paper covered both the front and back of the holes, which prevented cheating. The punchboards remained popular until the mid-20th century, though they eventually faded and were made illegal in several states as society's views on gambling changed.
This board is made of wood and weighs about three pounds. This piece measures 24" x 16". Boards like this one tended to be used quite heavily and, accordingly, were often damaged. This one, though, remains in Excellent condition and arrives with a Certificate of Authenticity. Besides its obvious gambling themed appeal, the piece is also good for those who collect items from the World War II era and the years immediately following it. The war firmly established the United States as the world's preeminent power and leader of the Free World, a position that it still holds today.
