Known as "the beer that made Milwaukee famous," Schlitz was one of the most popular beers in America for much of the 20th century. In fact, it was number one on that list several times in the first half of the century, initially achieving the status in 1902, and swapped the title with Anheuser-Busch repeatedly in the 1950's. Its famous advertising slogan, "When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer," helped the company to grow into the status of an American icon.

The beer was brewed by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, which was based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company often sent signs like this one to restaurants and bars free of charge to advertise their products. They were the forerunners to the beer signs that appear in and around bars today. This sign dates back to the 1930's and the Great Depression. Signs like this were heavily used, so they were often damaged. That makes this sign stand out, as it remains in excellent condition. The sign measures 14" and weighs about three pounds.
