National Bohemian Beer 9" Celluloid Sign
Why order this 9" Celluloid National Bohemian Beer Sign?
The National Brewing Company brewed National Bohemian Beer, known affectionately as "Natty Boh," for the first time in 1885. The company was later bought by Pabst Brewing Company. Brewed to this day at the Molson Coors facilities in Trenton, Ohio and Albany, Georgia, the beer remains popular in Baltimore, where about 90% of its sales take place. At one point, the brewing company's president, Jerold Hoffberger, owned the Baltimore Orioles, and the beer was sold at Memorial Stadium. It became that city's "official beer" in the 1960's.
This sign from the company was the kind that was sent to bars and restaurants free of charge to promote the product. Most signs like this have been damaged because of how heavily they were used, but this one remains in excellent condition. Made from celluloid over cardboard, the sign measures 9" and weighs about six ounces. It is the kind of item that would fit nicely either as part of a collection of beer or Baltimore-related items or as a standalone piece from a bygone era., as it dates back to the 1950's.
