Card Game 50 Cent 1940's Punchboard
Why buy this 50 Cent Card Game 1940's Punchboard?
Punchboards are a form of gambling that date back to the 1700's. They appeared mostly in taverns, where owners would sell chances to punch holes in the board. Each piece contained a number or game piece, and the patron would win whatever prize, if there was one, that was associated with the number or piece that they found. In the 1800's, operators began cheating by having holes in both sides of the board. They could thereby prevent their customers from winning. The boards declined in popularity until late in the century when new ones that had paper covering both sides were invented. Punchboards remained popular until the years following the Second World War, when societal attitudes toward gambling began to change. Some states even passed laws banning the boards.
This board is made of wood and was made in the 1940's, i.e. near the end of the popularity of the boards. The board weighs about three pounds and measures 24" x 18". Although it is nearly a century old, it remains in Excellent condition. A certificate of authenticity comes with this board.
