Background and Career of Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce had to put some work in to get things moving. While many NBA players were already standouts by their first year or two of high school, Pierce was not living up to his own expectations. He made the right call and rather than transferring to a different high school to get more playing time, he put his own time in at the gym and soon became a standout player for Inglewood. Once he achieved this upward momentum, which included a spot as a McDonald's All-American, it carried him through college and into his professional career.

Pierce's college career was more successful than his high school career. He earned a number of awards and accolades during these years, including MVP awards in multiple major tournaments. While he was successful at Kansas, he only played for three years. After his junior season he opted for the NBA draft. In 1998 he was selected in the first round of the draft as the tenth overall pick and went to the Boston Celtics. Ironically, it was noted that Pierce strongly disliked the Celtics growing up, he was a Lakers fan.
