The Big Fundamental
When you hear about the background of many professional athletes, it's quite common to hear about them starting with their sport at a very young age. This was not the case with retired NBA star Tim Duncan. When he was young he actually wanted to be an Olympic swimmer. He excelled at swimming but unfortunately things just didn't work out there. Tim Duncan is from Saint Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. When Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989, it destroyed the only Olympic size swimming pool on the island. This was the start of a chain of events that led Duncan to try basketball.
Compared to when many other NBA players got their start in the sport, Duncan was a bit older. He was already a teenager when he was just starting to learn the game. However, Duncan was a quick learner and became a standout player during his high school years. He continued playing through college, he attended Wake Forest University and played for the Demon Deacons. After playing all through college, he entered the NBA draft in 1997 and was selected as the first overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan was very successful in the NBA and spent his entire career with the Spurs.
This Tim Duncan card received the grade of Mint 9 from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), which indicates this specimen was found to have only a single minor flaw.
