Starbury Career and Background
Stephon Marbury was given the nickname Starbury at a young age and the name still follows him today. He was born in Brooklyn in 1977 and grew up in the Coney Island area. Marbury was a standout player during his high school years. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, which was already known for its impressive basketball program at that time. In spite of the competition, Marbury set himself apart as the star player of the team. He also played for an AAU team during these years, the New York Gauchos. During high school he earned a spot as a McDonald's All-American and was considered a top recruit by colleges.
After some persuasion Marbury committed to Georgia Tech. However, he only stayed at Georgia Tech for a single season before opting to declare his eligibility for the NBA draft. In 1996 Marbury was selected fourth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the draft. He was then immediately traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves who he spent his first few seasons in the NBA with. After his first few seasons Marbury played for a number of different teams including the New Jersey Nets, the Phoenix Suns, the New York Knicks, and the Boston Celtics. In 2010, Marbury went to the Chinese Basketball Association.
